Hamburg-Czech rail container traffic keeps growing

Rail container traffic between Hamburg and the Czech Republic recorded an 8.6% rise in 2018 to a total of 480,000 containers and the trend is continuing upwards

Around 90% of Hamburg’s hinterland container traffic moves by rail and the Czech axis is a key component. There are around 60 weekly container shuttle train round trips between the German port and the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

HHLA’s subsidiary Metrans, headquartered in Prague, is the key player here, some 250 Czech shippers and forwarders were told at the recent annual Hamburg promotion event in the Prague town hall.

Adding that Hamburg is the Czech Republic’s leading seaport, Ingo Egloff, chairman of Hafen Hamburg Marketing (HHM) noted that the rail container proposition is such that even parts of Austria and Hungary are served via the Czech terminals.

The Alte Süderelbe container train shunting yard in Hamburg-Moorburg is Europe’s biggest of its kind.
