New automobile terminal in Philadelphia

Updated: Nov 5, 2019

PhilaPort has officially inaugurated the new Southport Auto Terminal, the port’s first new terminal in 45 years

Pennsylvania’s Governor Tom Wolf opened the new Southport Auto Terminal in the presence of several hundred invited guests from industry, trade, shipping and logistics companies, representatives from politics, administration and trade associations in the port of Philadelphia.

The new auto terminal is a milestone in the port’s history and represents an investment of some US$100M by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It is a major part of Governor Wolf’s US$300M Port Development Plan, which covers also new container gantry cranes for Packer Avenue Marine Terminal delivered earlier this year.

The 155-acre (63-ha) site contains a 108,000 ft2 (10,000 m2) Vehicle Processing Centre, with two car washes that can wash around 200 cars per hour. The VPC can process more than 1,000 vehicles per day, has heated floors to ease operations during the winter season and a modern body shop with double prep stations and two joined double paint booths. At 98 Annex, another 600 cars can be processed per day.

Southport Auto Terminal is located adjacent to two US Class 1 railroads CSX and NS and is also served by CN covering Canadian destinations. The terminal can accommodate 24,000 cars at any given time and handles some 110 vessels annually. The terminal is owned by Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, leased by DVR and operated by Glovis America.
